Voice Disorders Explained

Voice Disorders. If you have ever been on the receiving end of this term either for yourself or for your child, you probably have a lot of questions. One of the first questions you likely have is: who treats this? At GASLC we do have clinicians who treat voice disorders for all ages. Ms. Angelica is on the blog today to answer some frequently asked questions regarding voice therapy!

Voice disorders can be functional, meaning that vocal abuse (screaming, yelling, excessive whispering) has created an imbalance in your voice production.

            SLPs and ENTs can help!

Hoarseness, breathiness, difficulty with loudness, or excessive strain

Vocal hygiene is incredibly important and has 3 components: health, abuse, and misuse. You can avoid yelling, screaming, and shouting, increase your hydration, reduce or eliminate caffeine, excessive throat clearing, and grunting during exercise.

If you have trouble with your loudness or are prone to these examples of vocal abuse, reach out to your SLP and see if voice therapy is needed for you!

Thank you Ms. Angelica! As always, reach out to your therapist if you have questions or contact us here!
